Byron Nelson's won his first Masters in 1937 staging an improbable come from behind victory over Ralph Guldahl. Nelson posted a course record 66 in the first round followed by a 72, then a 75 on Saturday that left an uphill battle on Sunday. In the final round, Nelson picked up 6 strokes on Guldahl on the par-3 12th and par-5 13th; his 32 on the back nine, gave him a 2 stroke victory.
Nelson's 1942 win came in a memorable playoff with his childhood friend and caddy mate, Ben Hogan. After two rounds, Nelson had a 10 stroke lead over Hogan. Hogan caught Nelson, shooting 67-70 in the final two rounds to force the playoff. Hogan jumped to an early 3 stroke lead in the playoff, but Nelson battled back, shooting 69-70 to beat Hogan and secure his second Masters title.
